What are GHS labels and COSHH signs?

There are a number of different types of hazardous substance and chemical safety signs out there. The key types are COSHH signs and GHS labels. So, what exactly do these dangerous goods labels mean and which do you need?

GHS labels

The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (known as the GHS) is a system of chemical safety signs agreed upon by the UN and recognised around the world. GHS labels categorise harmful substances into the following groups:

  • Explosive
  • Flammable
  • Oxidiser
  • Gases under pressure
  • Corrosive
  • Harmful or irritant
  • Toxic
  • Human health hazard
  • Dangerous to the environment

COSHH signs

COSSH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations lay out exactly how chemical safety signs should be used in the UK. COSHH signs ensure that your organisation is compliant with these regulations, which were designed to protect employees and members of the public.
