What are GHS labels, CHiP labels and COSHH signs?
There are a number of different types of hazardous substance and chemical safety signs out there. The key types are COSHH signs and GHS labels. So what exactly do these mean? And which do you need?
The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (known as the GHS) is a system of chemical safety signs agreed upon by the UN. This means that these labels are globally recognised. GHS labels categorise harmful substances into the following groups:
- Gases under pressure
- Harmful or irritant
- Human health hazard
- Dangerous to the environment
COSSH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations lay out exactly how chemical safety signs should be used in the UK. COSHH signs ensure that your organisation is compliant with these regulations, designed to protect employees and members of the public.
CHiP labels have been used to mark any goods that are to be transported and which contain dangerous substances but are now being replaced by GHS labels.
Transporting hazardous substances: Hazard diamonds
Transporting hazardous substances requires its own chemical safety signs. We provide hazard triangles to keep you safe on the roads. Our hazard warning diamonds are compliant with BS 5378 and meet all of the following regulations:
- ADR for road transport
- RID for rail transport
- IMDG for marine transport
- IATA for air transport
