Hazard Warning Signs

Hazard warning signs form part of our Safety Signs collection. Each of the signs in this department consists of a yellow triangle with a black border and an instantly identifiable black pictogram, along with a text panel containing black text on a yellow background.

These safety signs aim to identify and inform of threats, dangers, and potential health risks. We sell warning signs for a wide variety of hazards - simply select the relevant category from the list below. Alternatively, feel free to contact Label Source for further assistance.

Legally, hazard warning signs must comply with both the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Health and Safety Regulations 1996. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 places responsibility on the employer to keep employees safe.

The Health and Safety Regulations 1996 outline workplace regulations around hazard warning sign usage. To maximise safety, hazard warning signs must be:

  • Clear and legible
  • Related to an in-work safety policy and risk assessment
  • For a specific hazard

Under the 1996 Regulations, employers must supply hazard warning signs if needed. Without them, a risk assessment isn’t considered complete, which leaves employers liable.

Hazard warning signs have been proven to reduce workplace accidents, quell employee fears and make working safer.

The Regulations also ensured signs and labels were harmonised between the UK and the EU under the GHS system. This is still in place after Brexit, and you can find out more here:GHS: The History of the Globally Harmonized System

What are Hazard Signs?

Hazard warning signs are a category of safety sign that are used specifically to warn about major risks. They’re essential for protecting the health and wellbeing of workers and guests, as well as making sure your business is operating legally.

Where Should Hazard Signs be Placed?

Hazard signs should be positioned in highly visible locations, ideally at eye level, in the area of the hazard and on any entrances to the hazardous area. For example, a biohazard warning sign should be displayed on the entrance to a room with biohazards, as well as on the containers themselves.

What Hazard Signs Are Available?

There are three main categories of hazard signs: warning hazard signs, danger hazard signs, and caution hazard signs.

  • Warning hazard signs are used to highlight any risks that could result in injury or death. These take the form of a yellow triangle and a black exclamation point, accompanied by descriptive writing.
  • Danger hazard signs are vital for protecting lives, as these signs mark danger with extreme risks to life, such as danger of electric shock.
  • Caution hazard signs are for dangers that are less likely to result in death, but that people should be made aware of nonetheless. For example, slips, trips and falls.

Some examples of these include:
