Photoluminescent products are an important lifeline for many industries. From stickers to glow sticks, glow-in-the-dark items are found everywhere.

Reflective safety armbands, also known as hi-vis armbands, are one such product. However, instead of being used to signpost areas or dangers, they are used to keep track of people. Some of us need to work in poor lighting, meaning being seen is of paramount importance.

Below, we’ll discuss different reasons why people use reflective safety armbands, how they work and which industries they’re commonly used in.

Why Do People Use Reflective Safety Armbands?

Several large industries make use of reflective safety armbands, namely:

  • Security
  • Traffic wardens
  • Police
  • Ambulance staff and other emergency services
  • Fire wardens
  • Stewards
  • Safety officers

The theme that underpins all of these industries is safety. Reflective armbands help people like security officers spot their co-workers, which can be important during times of crisis. It also allows members of the public to find them quickly.

The same can be applied to fire wardens and other industries. Sometimes, you may even see a tutor or schoolteacher use hi-vis armbands on school trips, especially if the area they’re going to has poor lighting.

People and professionals use these armbands for one major reason: they’re a cost-effective safety net. Each one costs relatively little and allows for efficient recognition.

How Does “Glow In The Dark” Work?

So, how do reflective safety armbands work? Glow-in-the-dark products are one of those things people can take for granted. People sort of know how they work, but they couldn’t tell you exactly why. Thankfully, we’re here to explain it.

Photoluminescent properties are caused by chemicals called phosphors. These are elements that radiate light after being energised. Sometimes these elements are energised by UV light, and at other times by electrical light or natural light.

In the case of reflective safety armbands, they are energised by natural light. This means any time they are exposed to the sun’s UV radiation, it is charging energy. This energy is effectively “released” in darkness, as the phosphors remain energised. This light can last for a significant period, sometimes up to 12 hours.

The reliability of photoluminescent products is why reflective safety armbands are so popular. Safety products, especially those which are found on people, must be 100% reliable, and glow-in-the-dark technology ensures that.
