Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, Download, Creamfields… there’s nothing better than a British music festival with your friends. Well, when the weather plays ball.

To make a festival experience something goers will remember for a lifetime – for the right reasons – organisers have the responsibility of implementing a number of health and safety systems, as well as crowd control management.

How can signage and barrier tape from retailers like us help facilitate this? Read on to find out.

How to Plan a Festival, Spatially

Getting lost can lead to missed performances, accidents, injuries, and disappointment. So, clear mapping and directing of foot traffic should be a key factor on your checklist when planning a festival site.

Here are a few tapes and signs we think should be on your shopping list.

What Barrier Tapes Do You Need For a Festival?

Crowd barriers are an essential part of any public event for herd management, but using retractable barrier tape can also be useful to indicate walkways, no access areas, hazards, and more, where a less permanent (and cumbersome) solution is required.

Non-adhesive barrier and security tapes come in a variety of forms and they’re incredibly versatile. However, our first port of call for a festival would be our economy hazard tape.

Available in red and white or yellow and black chevron, this barrier tape is perfect for cording off potential hazards, no parking areas, or for crowd control. Plus, it’s easy to set up and remove.

If you’re expecting a high volume of people, heavy duty versions are available.

For zoning camping areas, coloured barrier tape is ideal. Simply choose a colour per zone and start cordoning!

Lastly, you may wish to consider printed barrier tape to indicate where VIP areas are or where only staff should enter. Whether you choose tape that says, ‘no entry’, ‘restricted area’ or ‘do not enter’ there is no mistaking the meaning of these barriers.

What Signs Do You Need For a Festival?

Signs, by nature, are universal with instantly recognisable symbols and colours. These signs should indicate the following:

Restrooms – where facilities are and whether they’re for a specific gender, unisex, or are disability-friendly. You may also like signs to indicate cleaning is in progress or if a toilet is out of service.

Entrance and Exit -  where to enter and leave the public area, using messaging such as ‘way in’ or ‘way out’.

Emergency Exits – additional exits in the event of a medical emergency or fire.

Electric Charging Stations – where festival goers can charge their phones, or electric vehicles.

Stages – direction of each stage.

Refreshments – direction of food and drinks venders, or other refreshment facilities such as water fountains, catering, or stalls.

Visitor Information – where festival staff can be found to provide assistance.

Parking – where to find dedicated event parking for those who have travelled by car, van, bus or bike.

Refuse – where to safely and tidily dispose of rubbish or recyclable materials.

First Aid – where festival goers can reach first aiders and medical supplies should they be required.

Fire Safety -  where to safely gather after utilising emergency exits in the case of fire, where to find emergency equipment, and locate fire alarms.

Smoking Areas – where smoking is and isn’t allowed. Remember, smoking is not prohibited inside public spaces in the UK. This often includes vapes.

Campsite – where it is suitable to pitch a tent for overnight camping.

You may also like to consider other miscellaneous options such as keep clear, no entry, or VIP signs.

The format of these signs can vary depending on where they will be located, their purpose, and how large they need to be. For example, you could add directional messaging to barriers or walls, hang welcome and goodbye banners above entrances and exits, or even floor arrows to direct people around the festival site. A classic signpost is always fun too!
