Code 39 barcode:

This is considered as a self-checking barcode, eliminating the need to check character calculations. This barcode is widely used, mainly in industrial, government and defence applications. These barcodes can be decoded with virtually any barcode reader. Code 39 barcode symbol consist of symbols representing numbers 0-9, upper class letters A-Z.

Code 128 barcode:

The 128 barcode encodes text and numbers and is used for several implementations, such as shipping and electronics. The 128 barcode contains 106 printing patterns, each having different meanings, depending on characters.

Interleave 2 of 5 barcode:

This barcode is used mainly for warehouse and distribution. This barcode is used to encode pairs of numbers into self-checking, high- destiny barcode format. Every two digits on the barcode are interleaved with each other, creating a single symbol.

EAN13 – EAN8 barcodes:

These barcode labels are commonly used for products within retail stores, such as food, clothes, books etc. The difference between these two labels is the amount of digits each barcode holds. The last digits on the EAN13 barcodes normally represent a country code. Both of these barcodes support a supplemental two or five digit number, to be used on the main barcode symbol.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently conducted a month-long inspection programme to take a closer look at health and safety on Britain's construction sites. Its findings? 40% of the 1,748 construction sites visited failed the HSE's spot-checks. Worse still, 20% of the sites visited were so dreadfully non-compliant that the HSE was forced to pursue formal enforcement action against them - that's almost 350 sites in dire violation of basic health and safety laws!

Clearly, this country's construction industry needs to make more of an effort to protect its workers. Building sites can be very dangerous places, with all kinds of accidents just waiting to happen. Height safety was the area most commonly found lacking by the HSE's investigation, with workers repeatedly failing to take the measures necessary to prevent dangerous falls - this is particularly shameful, as height hazards tend to be very obvious and relatively easy to put right.

If you work on or are responsible for a construction site, you share in the responsibility to improve this dismal showing. Keep your eyes peeled for potential hazards, and if you see anything that you wouldn't want the HSE to see, act immediately! Health and safety regulations aren't there to cause headaches - they're there to save lives, and when all it takes is a safety sign or a strip of warning tape, there really is no excuse for letting your H&S standards slide.

Blank label

Amendments to the Safety at Street Works Act became effective on the 1^st October 2014, and introduced some changes to the traffic sign and barrier layouts on works or excavations on roadways, pavements and verges.

For carriageways with speed limits of 50mph or more, it is a requirement to provide extra warning signs with distance indicators counting down on the approach to the works.

Extra warning signs should be used if advanced visibility of the works is obscured, such as beyond a bend, over the brow of a hill, in a dip in the road, or where there may be overhanging trees or other natural obstructions to vision.

Site information signs are becoming compulsory on most sites, but recommended for all sites.  These signs are 600mm high by 450mm wide and can be attached by bungee straps to barriers (between top and bottom panels), without covering the reflective panels of the barrier. These reflective panels can include company name and logo, contact details, information on the works, and white panels for adding permit numbers.

Large format priority signs can be used to emphasise give way or priority when 2-way traffic is not possible, especially where works is greater than 80 metres in length, or where the traffic flow is greater than 42 vehicle over a three minute span.

All these measures form part of an effort to prevent accidents and injuries to the workforce or vehicle users, where road or mobile works are taking place.
